Glacier NP is actually not open much (just a little near the entry gates) that early in the year. Its deceptively close/small on some maps. Miles are long and landscapes are vast up here. I think you would short change both Yellowstone and GNP if you try to sqeeze both in in such a short time. Well, honestly even then you would not have enough time on the trip you mentioned to do it in an un-rushed manner. You would need to check the car drop off fees. If you have bigger budget, I would save a day or 2 by flying SLC to Bozeman and renting a car there with a drop off in Jackson, and flying open jaw back to SLC from there. Since you will be in SLC for business, check the local weather TV stations every day plus look at the Weather Channel for a regional view. It will be critical that you check the weather situation before you set out. Overnight Jacksonĭay 6: Drive up to the areas of Grand Teton where the roads are open. This goes over a significant mountain pass, so check on conditions before you set out. Overnight in West Yellowstone.ĭay 5: Drive West Yellowstone to Jackson via Driggs and Victor Idaho.
If the weather has been warm (by West Yellowstone standards) the snow will be too soft to walk on. This is groomed in the winter, but they likely will have stopped grooming by this time. If there is enough snow, rent snowshoes and walk the trail on the east side of town into the park. Overnight Gardinerĭay 4: Drive Gardiner back to Bozeman and down to West Yellowstone. Stop if you see anyone out with spotting scopes or long camera lenses.
Overnight in Gardiner.ĭay 3: Drive Gardiner to Mammoth and out to Cooke City thru Lamar Valley stopping where you like and where you can depending on snow levels in the pull outs. Drive the Upper Terraces if that little loop road is open (ask the Rangers at the Visitor Center) or walk up there from the Lower Terraces. Stop at the Mammoth Visitor Center and then walk the Mammoth Lower Terraces. Ok, here is one suggestion, weather permitting:ĭay 1: Drive SLC to Idaho Falls, pick up US 20, drive to West Yellowstone and up to Bozeman for the night.ĭay 2: Drive Bozeman to Gardiner and on in thru the North gate to Yellowstone.
